Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach at the foot of Ocean Avenue, Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is such a wonderful little village. Lying just south of Monterey Bay, it is the home to celebrities (Clint Eastwood was once the Mayor and Doris Day has a very dog friendly hotel in town), excellent restaurants, superb art galleries, plus a few overpriced, but interesting, antique stores. Ocean Avenue, the village's main street, is lined with shops selling everything from knick-knacks and souvenirs to haute couture and curiosities. It's a great village to walk around, and while wandering do not miss the little side streets, where some of the most interesting shops reside.

Ocean Avenue slopes down a hill that leads to a fantastic beach. Carmel Beach and Scenic Drive, which meanders along the top of the cliff line right at the beach, are both wonderful locations to gaze over the waves out to sea, take in the refreshing ocean air and just people watch.

We took a walk along the waters edge earlier this week, picking up a few shells, letting the wavelets wash over our feet and enjoying the sun and gentle breeze. What a marvelous beach. It is bounded by Carmel cottages on the cliffs to the east and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. At the north end is the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links and on the south is the Walker House, designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948-51.

Not all the interesting architecture was on the bluffs. Check out this sand castle, complete with moat.
If you have time, stop in at the Carmel Mission at the south edge of town or venture further south a couple of miles to spectacular Point Lobos.
